Who Comes to Bloomsday?
Bloomsday patrons sometimes come for a whole day of events, but often
they dip in and out of events. They are of many kinds: sometimes they
are beginning readers of Joyce, or would-be readers; often they have been
reading Joyce unassisted for years, or enjoyed the taste they got at school
or university; they are not necessarily Irish or Irish-Australian by identification,
but sometimes they are and they have an interest in Irish matters or history
or culture; they come from all walks of life, and while many have literary
interests, many have very broad tastes as readers. Many come knowing the
reputation of Joyce and wanting to test it for themselves. Most report
that hearing Joyce is a great aid to understanding the printed page.
