Three New 1916 Easter Rising Commemorative Events

In 2016 Bloomsday in Melbourne, with the support of the Cultural Heritage Committee of the Celtic Club,  offers  a suite of events commemorating the Easter Rising.

Friday 15 April at 7.30pm. With Liam Gillespie and other readers and musicians, this is the most intimate account of the seismic shocks endured by the  Inner Circle who were either executed or lived to mourn a whole generation of young men and women.  It will be a solemn and ceremonial occasion. One performance only.

  • Convicted on a Comma: The Trial of Roger Casement

Saturday 6 August, 2016, at 2.30pm and 7.30pm: Written and directed by Brian Gillespie, this event will re-enact the trial of Roger Casement, Knight of the Realm, Diplomat and to some, a Traitor and a dangerous Terrorist. The date in early August coincides with the centenary of Casement’s execution. Venue: Moonee Ponds Courthouse Museum, 768-770  Mount Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds.

Mounted with the support of the Ireland 1916 Global and Diaspora Programme,  Irish Embassy.

Courses:

  • Ulysses for Devotees3 has been running at U3A Melbourne  for many years. It has been studying Ulysses intensively for 16 two-hour sessions annually in two tranches. is contains a core of devoted readers, but is designed to enable new members to join the group. It works collegially. In 2016, in the centenary year of its publication, the group will turn its attention to Portrait in the first half of the year. Details will be published by U3A, but if interested, email presenter for more information meanwhile: francesdevlinglass@gmail.com
