About the event
There are two types of people: those who've read Ulysses, and those who haven't... yet!
Bloomsday in Melbourne has been introducing readers to Joyce for 30 years. In August and September we present two great opportunities to find out what everyone gets so excited about, in the company of Bloomsday’s Artistic Director Frances Devlin-Glass and Joycean Steve Carey. Both courses are suitable for absolute beginners, as well as for those already familiar with Joyce.
Our second event is a first crack at the big one: Ulysses itself. But not the whole thing, not yet. Instead we've selected a chapter, 'Nausicaa,' perhaps the book's funniest, sweetest (but also for its time astonishingly frank) and one of its most accessible. This was the chapter that got Ulysses banned around the world - before it had even been published! Find out what all the fuss was about...
By the end of the day you'll know a whole lot more about what Joyce was up to, how to get the most out of the book... and best of all, why it's so damned funny!
Your James Joyce journey begins here!
